Your Open Campus Block program in Osaka empowers you to craft a study abroad experience rooted in exploration, flexibility, and global perspective. You’ll enroll in CIEE courses and online courses taught through CIEE's global academic partner, ASU. Through co-curricular and extracurricular activities, immerse yourself in local culture on excursions such as a guided visit to Osaka Castle, a day trip to Nara to explore Todai-ji Temple and Nara Park, and a street food experience in Dotonbori featuring takoyaki and okonomiyaki. Osaka delivers a dynamic study abroad experience grounded in culture, history, and community.
Unique Experiences
Participate in a traditional tea ceremony (Sado)
guided by a tea master, to learn the etiquette and philosophy of Ichigo Ichie – treasuring each moment
Explore Osaka Castle and its expansive park
learning about Japan’s unification, legendary leaders, and the engineering of this iconic 16th century fortress
Experience Dotonbori’s neon-lit streets and street food scene
immersing yourself in Osaka’s famous kuidaore (“eat ’til you drop”) culture along the canal
Unmatched Flexibility: Spend one or two consecutive 6-week blocks in the same host city or travel between cities for a comparative cultural experience.
Academic Courses: Choose from CIEE courses and online courses delivered by CIEE’s global partner, ASU, that align with your academic major.
Immersive Experiences: Participate in activities, excursions, study tours, and more that showcase your host city's culture, values, and local art, film, music, cuisine, and sports scenes.
Community Impact Initiative: Get involved with local organizations through service opportunities that address real community needs while building cross-cultural connections and hands-on experience.
Academic Projects: Enroll in an optional for-credit academic project that aligns with your goals, qualifications, resume, and availability of placements.
Excursions & Activities
CIEE’s excursions and cultural activities in Osaka will open doors for you to explore Japan's rich diversity, language, culture, history, and timeless beauty in ways that will enhance your time abroad.
Samples of excursions and activities:
Witness Japan’s national sport by attending a live sumo tournament or a morning training session at a local stable, exploring the power, ritual, and tradition of sumo
Visit Nara Deer Park and Todai-ji to see the world’s largest bronze Buddha and interact with the sacred deer that roam freely around the historic temple grounds
Walk through a life-sized recreation of Edo period Osaka, exploring how daily life and the city’s streetscapes have evolved over centuries
