Number of Awards

A limited number of IEF Scholarships are available and are awarded based on a combination of financial need and academic merit.

Funding Source

The UNT Study Abroad Office (SAO) is responsible for disbursing scholarships generated by funds collected through the International Education Fee (IEF) assessed each academic term to all UNT students.  The purpose of this fund is to support the development of UNT students into global citizens.  The IEF Scholarship is available to UNT students participating in programs abroad approved by the Study Abroad Office.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you:
  • Must be a degree-seeking student (undergraduate or graduate) at time of application at UNT enrolled in at least one UNT class in the 12 months preceding the term abroad and must not graduate prior to program completion.
  • Must participate in a SAO-approved credit-bearing international program OR be registered with SAO for international academic research OR an SAO-approved non-credit international program.
  • Be in good academic and conduct standing.
  • Have a current FAFSA on file at the time of application, be eligible to receive UNT financial aid for the program , and have unmet need; International students must demonstrate financial need by providing additional supporting documents on request.  Graduate students must be earning degree-relevant graduate credit to receive this award.
  • Must not have previously received an IEF Scholarship in their current academic career, i.e. undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Must have a 2.0 or higher cumulative UNT GPA at time of application; SAO reserves the right to revoke an award from students who fail to maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA until the program start date.
  • Must NOT be a participant on the UNT Emerald Eagle or Texas Leader Scholars Study Abroad Programs.
All scholarships awarded are conditional upon your full participation in your study abroad program.  If you withdraw from your program, for any reason (voluntary or involuntary), all awards will be revoked. If your award is revoked after funds have been disbursed to you, SAO will put a hold on your UNT student account for the amount of the scholarship.
