Global Intensive Opportunity (GIO) Program Renewal

Developing a UNT GIO Program

In order to qualify to submit a proposal renewal, certain parameters of the previous program are required to remain the same. The program name, leader, and location must remain the same in order to submit a proposal renewal. Do you meet these requirements? If not, you should not continue completing the forms in this renewal application. Instead, you should go to the Faculty Led Proposal page to submit a new program proposal.

Faculty are key to the sustainable success of study abroad at the University of North Texas. Faculty have tremendous influence on students' learning and development. In addition to their interaction with students in the classroom where we encourage them to promote study abroad broadly, faculty also have the opportunity to work with the Study Abroad Office (SAO) to plan, create, and teach on a study abroad program. SAO provides administrative and logistical support for all faculty-led programs, which offer educational opportunities to students throughout the year. UNT faculty-led programs are designed to encourage a variety of students to study abroad, and these opportunities would not be possible without the dedication and effort of the faculty who lead these programs.


The information provided in this section of our website is intended for faculty who, with the support of their department and college/school, are seeking the assistance of SAO in the development and administration of a faculty-led program abroad.

 

UNT Standards of Good Practice for Study Abroad 

The University of North Texas' study abroad practices are based upon the Forum on Education Abroad's Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad and Code of Ethics for Education Abroad. These documents provide a strong foundation for the development of academically sound programs and successfully guide educators through each stage of the international experience. For specific guidance on faculty led programs, please refer to the Forum on Education Abroad's Guide to Leading Short-Term Education Abroad Programs. 

 

Faculty Led Program Handbook and Proposal Timeline 

The Faculty Led Program Handbook is designed to prepare you for this responsibility and provide you with the information you need to design and implement a successful program in accordance with UNT policy. It is intended to guide both first-time and continuing Faculty Leaders through the entire process. SAO will be your partner throughout your time as a Faculty Leader, and this handbook will help you learn more about the resources available to you through our office and dedicated staff. Please review the handbook and contact the Study Abroad Office if you have any questions about completing the program proposal.

 

Faculty Development 

The Study Abroad Office will conduct a series of optional professional development workshops and the Preparedness and Emergency Response Seminar, required annually for all faculty leaders prior to leading a program. Topics include:

  • Disciplinary Response and Resources
  • Campus Security Authority Training
  • Health and Accident Insurance
  • Student Health Resources
  • Financial Matters and Travel Processes
